Director, Clinical Microbiology

Our client is a clinical-stage biotechnology committed to innovative drug development. They have asked us to assist them in their search for a Director, Clinical Microbiology.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Reports directly to the Vice President, Research.
  • Organizes and oversees the day to day operations of the Microbiology Laboratory.
  • Supports discovery, pre-clinical, and clinical stage compounds.
  • Designs, validates, conducts, and manages critical microbiologic experiments.
  • Oversees planning, conduct, and reporting of experiments performed in the lab.
  • Serves as Study Director for advanced or specialized microbiology studies.
  • Duties include test scheduling, test preparation, proper application of test method(s), data collection, data review, and approval of final report of analysis.
  • Provides technical and scientific guidance to scientists.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of systems, processes, and plans of experiments.
  • Ensures that results of experiments are delivered in a compliant manner, and within quality, cost and timeline parameters.
  • Develops long term strategic plan so that the lab functions at the highest level of quality.
  • Ensures compliance with laboratory SOPs relevant to the conduct of laboratory work.
  • Plays a lead role in the development, review, and approval of Laboratory SOP's, protocols, and reports.
  • Maintains working knowledge of current industry standards and practices.
  • Represents the company externally to scientific experts, regulators, development partners and funding agencies.
  • Contributes to the generation of regulatory submissions, Investigator Brochures, Microbiology manuals for clinical studies, IMPDs, and similar documents.
  • Authors scientific abstracts, manuscripts and reports.
  • Presents data at scientific and grant review meetings.
  • Serves as a mentor and fosters development of direct reports.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology, or relevant discipline, required.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of clinical microbiology experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Requires extensive hands-on experience and knowledge in microbiology.
  • Experience successfully managing a microbiology laboratory required.
  • Direct people management highly preferred.
  • Must have solid leadership skills and excellent people and project management skills.
  • Knowledge and experience designing, expressing, and purifying recombinant proteins highly preferred.
  • Must have the demonstrated ability to design, conduct, and report on independent microbiology research.
  • Requires a track record of publications and scientific presentations.
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Documentation Practice (GDP) required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must have the ability to influence, negotiate, and successfully communicate with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Requires exceptional organizational, planning, and project management skills.
