Oncology Biomarkers, Senior Principal Research Scientist

Our client is a global, research-based biopharmaceutical company.  They have asked us to assist them in their search for an Oncology Biomarkers, Senior Principal Research Scientist.

The Cancer Biomarkers group leads translational research, biomarker identification, and diagnostic development for the Company’s Oncology pipeline.  They have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Research Scientist reporting to the Functional Area head.

Major tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Develops and implements translational medicine and biomarker strategies for oncology compounds at all stages of drug discovery and development.
  • Establishes and implements a strategic translational biomarker plan for oncology clinical development programs to demonstrate target engagement/modulation and pharmacodynamic effects, and to develop patient stratification markers.
  • Works with a multi-disciplinary team on experimental execution and data analysis of all aspects of translational and biomarker research.
  • Designs, qualifies, and deploys scientific methods for effective use of biomarkers in clinical protocols.
  • Provides clinical trial support, from biomarker study design to data and report generation.
  • Establishes and manages external collaborations to accomplish key biomarker objectives.
  • Drives the strategy for development of companion diagnostics, including study design, diagnostic assay qualification, and testing.
  • Maintains strong awareness and understanding of biomarker and personalized medicine research and drug-diagnostic co-development.
  • Functions as an internal expert in oncology biomarkers and personalized medicine with ability to implement and interpret data from molecular markers and platforms including next generation sequencing, IHC, FISH, and others.
  • Monitors adherence to protocols and to regulatory standards for biomarker research.
  • May supervise one or more employees either directly or in a matrixed environment.

We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Ph.D. and/or M.D. with 10+ years of relevant post-doctoral oncology R&D experience in the pharmaceutical industry or academia.
  • M.S. in Science or related field or Pharm.D. with 16 years of related work experience may be considered.
  • BS in Science or related field with 18 years of related work experience a possibility, but strong preference for candidates with an advanced degree.
  • Proven leadership skills in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence and productivity in independent research.
  • Must have excellent publication and oral presentation record.
  • Extensive knowledge of cancer biology, biomarker and companion diagnostic development and clinical trial methodology.
  • Industry experience is valued.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential; demonstrated ability to work in a team environment as well as the ability to manage cross-functional efforts.
  • Builds strong relationships with peers and cross functionally with partners outside of team to enable higher performance.
