Senior/Executive Director Cardiovascular Translational Medicine – MA
We are conducting a retained search on behalf of our client, a leading global pharmaceutical company.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a global team influencing the future direction of Cardiovascular medicine in a successful drug discovery and development environment with close collaboration across Research, Clinical Research and Development. These positions strengthen the team during a period of growth in our strong pipeline. You will be a key individual contributor leading a global cross-functional team across multiple supporting business groups.
Responsibilities will include:
- Develop and implement innovative clinical strategies for drug development projects, focusing specifically on the critical Proof of Concept phase
- Contribute senior level expertise to Research supporting target selection, target validation and preclinical development of compounds. Review and evaluate cross-Disease Area activities at and beyond the lead optimisation stage. Provides clinical context and helps design optimal preclinical studies
- Major initiator of PoC strategy and early Clinical Development Plan
- Ensure full implementation of studies during PoC phase by providing medical and scientific leadership and expertise to all line functions on the project team
o Supervise the clinical team (including TM colleagues) in preparing, conducting, and analyzing 3–4 PoC clinical trials of increasing complexity
o Ensure appropriate communication of clinical team matters, including study results, to project teams and the Cardiovascular Disease Area Decision Board
o Oversee publication and external presentation of PoC clinical study results
- Develop and implement compound related and Disease Area Biomarker strategies alongside Biomarker Development
- The Senior Translational Medicine company representative to Health Authorities in matters and meetings which focus on exploratory development. Negotiate effectively with HA representatives on all aspects of Translational Medicine and obtain results favourable to the company
- Senior Translational Medicine representative to external Translational Medicine/medically related experts and organisations. Advance the interests of the company by knowledge, style and personal skill and enhance the position of the corporation with these individuals and groups (including business development and licensing due-diligence exercises)
- Provide specific medical and scientific expertise based on your medical and scientific training for all Disease Area-specific studies as needed. Provide further medical and scientific expertise to other Disease Areas or other line functions (e.g. Clinical Development & Medical Affairs)
- Provide direct or supervisory medical support for all pharmacokinetic studies
- Evaluate clinical centres and foster communication with crucial collaborating investigators. Interact effectively with external Key Opinion Leaders and internal company KOL in your scientific and clinical subspecialty field
- Prepare and implement DA- or project-specific training and educational programs for project team colleagues from Translational Medicine and other line functions
- Mentor Translational Medicine and Clinical Trial Leaders on scientific, clinical, and drug development issues
Desired experience and qualifications
- Medical Degree in Cardiology OR MD Clinical Pharmacologist with Cardio expertise
- Credible direct basic science experience in cardiovascular disease indications supported by quality publications
- Strong Pharmaceutical Industry drug discovery and/or development experience preferred. Otherwise, considerable relevant experience from a Clinical Research Organisation or academic institution in a leadership position combining scientific and medical subspecialty skills with a proven translational expertise
- Solid clinical background with a number of years focus on cardiovascular indications. Recognized in your TA field by medical experts and health authorities
- Used to leading large cross-functional/matrix project teams
- Fluent verbal and written English
- Strategic thinking: creating major innovations with a sharp and objective intellect, experienced in balancing strategic thinking with detailed analysis, interpretation and reporting
- A results-driven self-starter and decision taker; open, confident and persuasive, succeeding through influence
- Strong cooperative team player, ability to be flexible and adapt to a changing environment
- A commercial outlook; used to helping a business achieve its objectives
- Well-developed interpersonal skills with good presence; experienced presenter & communicator, clear and logical presentation of complex strategic issues
- Good planning, prioritisation, problem solving and organisational skills
- Resilient, energetic and enthusiastic; responding constructively to challenging new ideas and inputs
